Master Cuban percussionist Juan Carlos Allende, saxophonist/composer Gai Bryant and pianist Daniel Pliner will be in Tamworth to direct a very special workshop exclusively for the Tamworth Conservatorium. All three perform with Sydney-based Cuban Jazz group Caribé. They have worked with Grammy-nominated Cuban pianist Elio Villafranca and acclaimed Cuban percussionist Justo Pelladito on three national tours.
On Sunday, 31 January Jan from 2.00-4.30 pm all three will be workshopping and exploring rhythmic patterns for Cuban cha cha chá, Afro-Cuban 6/8 and Mozambique. This will be a hands-on workshop with no experience required. All instrumentalists will play through the rhythm patterns first then combine them with melodies and harmony parts. Juan, Gai and Daniel's aim is to give everyone attending a good understanding of how the individual parts fit together so that you can have fun playing this music. If you have any hand percussion instruments please bring them along.
On Saturday, 30 January at 7:30 pm, Caribe will perform in Armidale, transporting you to Cuba for one night through dance, music, audience participation, stories and chants. Tickets available on Eventbrite.
