Ensemble FAQs

Why should I join an ensemble?

Joining an ensemble offers a wealth of benefits:

  • Fun and connection: Enjoy making music with others and forming new friendships!
  • Skill development: Enhance your playing or singing abilities, sight-reading, and aural skills.
  • Performance opportunities: Showcase your talent at events throughout the year.
  • Diverse repertoire: Explore and perform a wide range of musical styles and genres.
  • Ensemble techniques: Hone skills like rhythm and beat stability, blending and balancing sound, refining intonation, dynamics, and more.
  • Professional growth: Learn concert and rehearsal etiquette, teamwork, organisation, and problem-solving.
  • Special opportunities: Participate in workshops with touring musicians and guest teachers.
  • Accompaniment readiness: Regular ensemble practice helps students adapt quickly to playing or singing alongside piano accompaniment, making pre-concert or exam rehearsals more efficient.

Do I have to audition?

Some ensembles may require a “placement audition,” a relaxed meeting where the director learns about your skills and experience to match you with the right group. During the session, you might:

  • Perform a piece of your choice,
  • Answer questions about your musical background,
  • Play scales or exercises, and
  • Sight-read a short excerpt.

When can I join in?

Intake times depend on the ensemble’s schedule and performances. Check with the director for specific dates. In special circumstances, you may be able to join outside regular intake periods.

Can I attend a rehearsal to see if I like it?

  • For school-aged students, we don’t offer trial rehearsals. Instead, we encourage students to commit to at least one term. This allows them to fully experience the rehearsal process and gives the director time to adapt sessions to the group’s needs.
  • For adult students, a trial rehearsal may be arranged in consultation with the director and requires prepayment.

Do I have to perform?

Yes! Performances are a key part of being in an ensemble. Each member contributes to the group’s success, and skipping a performance can impact the entire ensemble—much like missing a game in a team sport. Exceptions can be discussed with the director if necessary.
